Over the past two decades, numerous biomedical reports have revealed the therapeutic benefits of molecular hydrogen (H₂) in alleviating oxidation-related diseases. H₂ has been shown to possess selective antioxidant properties against the most dangerous oxidants (hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite). H₂ demonstrates many biologically therapeutic properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-stress, anti-apoptotic, and anti-allergic effects, signalling molecule functions, regulation of redox balance, modulation of antioxidant enzyme gene expression, improvement of vascular function, downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, stimulation of energy metabolism, and protection of the nervous system.
Experimental and clinical studies have shown the potential use of hydrogen nutritional therapy to improve various health challenges, including cardiovascular diseases, respiratory and metabolic disorders, as well as obesity, gastrointestinal disorders, and brain and nervous system disorders.

Hydrogen nutritional therapy can be applied to various health challenges and offers a natural alternative to chemically manufactured products.

This review covers different methods of administration and the latest experimental and clinical research on the potential applications of H₂.

The effects of hydrogen water and psychological treatment in women with panic disorder

Summary:
The article investigates the link between inflammation and anxiety disorders, particularly in women, who are more prone to developing anxiety and depressive disorders in connection with autoimmune diseases. Hydrogen-rich water (HRW) is considered a promising treatment due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The purpose of the study was to analyse the effects of psychological treatment combined with the intake of hydrogen-rich water on symptoms of anxiety and depression, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, cortisol awakening response, and the general health status of women with panic disorder.

The study involved 25 women who were divided into a treatment group, which received both psychological treatment and 1.5 litres of hydrogen-rich water daily for three months, and a control group, which received only psychological treatment and a placebo. The results showed no significant differences between the groups regarding anxiety and depression symptoms. However, a reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines and an improvement in physical health and pain were observed in the treatment group.

The analysis indicated that both HRW and psychological treatment have the potential to reduce inflammation, but the effect of HRW did not reach statistical significance, possibly due to the small sample size. Psychological treatment, however, proved to be effective in reducing the measured variables, supporting its role in the treatment of anxiety and depression symptoms by influencing the inflammatory response and HPA-axis reactivity.

Conclusion: There is a link between inflammation and panic disorder, and it underscores the importance of healthy lifestyle changes as well as new therapeutic approaches to improve communication in the microbiome-gut-brain axis and reduce inflammatory processes.

The effect of hydrogen inhalation on Alzheimer's disease

Summary:
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Hydrogen (H₂) is a therapeutic gas with multiple functions, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. This study aims to develop a disease-modifying treatment for AD through multifunctional mechanisms.

Methods: Eight patients with AD inhaled 3% H₂ gas for one hour twice daily for six months, followed by a one-year follow-up period without H₂ inhalation. The patients were clinically assessed using the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog), and neuronal integrity was objectively assessed using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).

Results: A significant improvement of 4.1 points on the ADAS-cog was observed in the treated patients after six months of H₂ treatment, compared to an increase of 2.6 points in untreated patients. The DTI assessment also showed a significant improvement in neuronal integrity throughout the hippocampus. The improvements persisted during the follow-up period at six months (significant) and at one year (not significant).

Conclusion: This study indicates that the inhalation of H₂ gas not only alleviates temporary symptoms but also has disease-modifying effects, despite certain limitations.

The article emphasizes the potential of H₂ as a multifunctional agent for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and calls for further research to confirm these findings in larger, randomized studies.

Alzheimer's, quality of life, inflammation, and hydrogen therapy

Summary:
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that mainly affects older individuals. TBI is a significant health problem, as it can lead to long-term neurodegenerative consequences, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, primarily through oxidative stress and neuroinflammation.

The researchers used a model where transgenic mice were subjected to controlled cortical impact (CCI) to simulate TBI. The results showed that the consumption of hydrogen-rich water (mHW) reduced brain edema by approximately half, blocked pathological tau expression, and influenced changes in cytokines and protein levels in the brain. Furthermore, mHW demonstrated a significant maintenance of ATP levels and a regulation of genes related to oxidative metabolism and inflammation.

In a clinical trial, H₂ water was administered to humans to investigate its effect on cognitive function. The results indicate that mHW could potentially be an effective, non-toxic treatment for TBI by neutralizing oxidative stress, reducing neuroinflammation, and protecting against neuronal damage.

The article concludes that molecular hydrogen has promising therapeutic properties in connection with TBI and other neurodegenerative conditions and suggests that H₂ can be used clinically for the treatment of acute injuries such as TBI due to its ease of administration and safety profile.

Molecular hydrogen (H₂) in relation to reproductive health

The article investigates the therapeutic effect of molecular hydrogen, particularly in the form of hydrogen-rich water (H₂ water) and oxyhydrogen inhalation, on human reproductive health. Oxidative stress and inflammation are identified as significant factors associated with reduced fertility in both men and women.

In the study, it has been documented that H₂ functions as an effective antioxidant that can reduce levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thereby alleviate oxidative damage in the reproductive system. In women, H₂ can protect against conditions such as endometriosis and infertility by reducing inflammation and supporting hormonal signalling pathways. In men, H₂ helps improve sperm motility and reduce oxidative stress, which is important for the health and function of spermatozoa.

The results suggest that the consumption of H₂ water and the inhalation of oxyhydrogen can have a positive impact on both female and male reproductive health. This could potentially yield societal benefits by improving the quality of life for individuals and families.

In conclusion, the article determines that hydrogen-based therapies represent promising, non-toxic treatment methods that can support human health and reproductive well-being. Further research is required to explore the specific mechanisms behind the effects of H₂.

A systematic review of studies concerning endometriosis and gynaecological challenges

Summary of an article on oxidative stress and endometriosis: The article investigates the link between oxidative stress and endometriosis, a common gynaecological disease affecting many women of reproductive age. Endometriosis is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, which often leads to symptoms such as pelvic pain and infertility.

The authors point out that oxidative stress is an important factor in the pathogenesis of the disease and is associated with inflammation and tissue damage. Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body's ability to neutralize them. The study suggests that iron metabolism and oxidative stress markers are relevant to the development of endometriosis, as elevated levels of these substances can promote inflammation and cell growth.

Through a systematic literature review, various factors related to oxidative stress are identified, including enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, as well as cell cycle regulation, which may be significant for the development of endometriosis and related infertility. For example, higher levels of lipid peroxides and lower levels of antioxidant capacity have been observed in women with endometriosis.

The conclusion is that oxidative stress plays a central role in endometriosis, and that further research and clinical trials are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of antioxidants as a potential treatment for endometriosis and its related symptoms. The authors call for future research to focus on therapeutic approaches that address the oxidative imbalance associated with the disease.

Molecular hydrogen promotes wound healing

Summary: A recent study has shown that molecular hydrogen (H₂) can play an important role in promoting wound healing. The research demonstrates that H₂ induces early proliferation of epidermal stem cells, which is crucial for rapid and effective tissue regeneration. Additionally, hydrogen increases the production of extracellular matrix components that support structural and functional aspects of the healing process. Experimental results based on immunofluorescence staining and wound percentage measurements confirm that H₂ treatment leads to improved wound closure and cellular activity. The article also discusses how the antioxidant properties of hydrogen can contribute to a more robust inflammatory response and a more effective regenerative process. Overall, the research indicates that molecular hydrogen could represent a promising treatment that promotes wound healing by stimulating essential cell types and improving tissue functions, opening up potential for clinical applications.

Molecular hydrogen as a potential tool in fighting aging and related diseases

Summary:
Aging is a natural physiological process that entails a gradual decline in organismal functions, which can lead to chronic diseases. Molecular hydrogen (H₂) has been shown to exert therapeutic and preventive effects on various organs, primarily through its antioxidant properties, whereby it neutralises free radicals and modulates anti-inflammatory processes. This review examines the potential of H₂ for the treatment and prevention of age-related diseases.

H₂ functions as an effective antioxidant by neutralising hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite, activating cytoprotective pathways such as Nrf2 and HO-1, and regulating enzymes and proteasomes that are crucial for the cellular antioxidant defence. It helps maintain genomic integrity, counteracts cellular senescence, and influences key metabolic pathways, such as the mTOR system, autophagy, and mitochondrial function - all central elements of the aging process.

Regarding age-related diseases, H₂ can be applied in the treatment of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, where it reduces oxidative stress and inflammation. It has also shown positive effects in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain types of cancer by improving metabolism and reducing inflammation and cell apoptosis.

In conclusion, H₂ holds great potential as a therapeutic option in the fight against the aging process and its related diseases. Although results so far are promising, further clinical studies are required to confirm the efficacy of H₂ in humans and to establish optimal methods for its administration.

Keywords: Molecular hydrogen, aging, antioxidation, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer.

Hydrogen-rich water promotes better sleep and increases neuronal activity in the anterior brain of mice

Summary:
Hydrogen-rich water helps mice sleep better and increases activity in the brain.

Hydrogen-rich water improves sleep consolidation and increases signalling activity and intensity in the forebrain of mice. In the study, Tyler W. LeBaron, among others, investigated the effect of hydrogen-rich water (HRW) on sleep and neuronal activity in mice that suffered from sleep deprivation. The researchers found that HRW significantly improved sleep in both undisturbed and sleep-deprived mice. Mice that received HRW took less time to fall asleep, and a significant increase in both non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was observed after sleep deprivation.

The methods used included the implantation of electrodes to record electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) to measure sleep patterns.

The results showed that HRW not only improved sleep consolidation but also increased neurological signal activation in brain regions associated with sleep regulation, including the medial and lateral septum as well as the ventrolateral preoptic area.

The conclusion is that HRW can be an effective and safe treatment for improving sleep and recovery after sleep deprivation in mice, which may be relevant for humans suffering from sleep disorders. The article also highlights that insufficient sleep is a global challenge, and that new, safe treatments, such as HRW, could be promising in the treatment of sleep problems without the negative side effects often associated with medications for sleep disorders.

Effects of highly concentrated hydrogen-rich water on oxidative stress and performance in soccer players

Summary:
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the consumption of hydrogen-rich water (HRW) can improve athletic performance and reduce oxidative stress during exercise in soccer players. Exercise can lead to oxidative stress and inflammation, which can negatively affect muscle and performance function. Molecular hydrogen (H₂) possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a promising supplement to support performance and recovery in athletes.

The study was designed as a single-blind crossover experiment with 10 male university soccer players who consumed either HRW or mineral water (placebo) for 7 days. The participants completed a prolonged, intermittent high-intensity training session that simulated soccer training. The results were assessed based on variables such as oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production.

The results showed that H₂ supplementation significantly increased overall power output and the number of repetitions during strength training compared to the placebo. However, no significant differences were found in oxygen uptake, oxygen consumption, or heart rate between the H₂ group and the placebo group. This indicates that while hydrogen-rich water can improve performance capacity, it appears to have a limited effect on muscle fatigue and recovery.

Overall, the results suggest that the consumption of hydrogen water over 8 days can increase muscular endurance in trained individuals. However, H₂ alone does not seem sufficient to accelerate recovery after intense training. Further research is needed to uncover the long-term effects of H₂ and to determine the most effective administration method for improving muscular performance in athletes.

Endurance and recovery – effects of 8 days of hydrogen-rich water consumption

Summary:
This study investigates how 8 days of intermittent consumption of molecular hydrogen-rich water (HRW) affects muscular endurance and recovery processes during strength training in trained adults. The purpose is to assess whether HRW can reduce oxidative stress, improve performance, and recover muscle fatigue after intensive training.

The study included 18 men with an average age of 19.7 years who, over a period of 7 days, consumed either HRW or pure water (placebo) before, during, and after training. The training consisted of strength intervals focusing on muscular endurance as well as neuromuscular functions. The effects were measured through variables such as power output, number of repetitions, and subjective ratings of fatigue and recovery.

The results showed that HRW significantly improved overall power output and the number of repetitions in strength training compared to the placebo. In contrast, there were no significant differences between the groups in measurements of muscle fatigue, including countermovement jump (CMJ) height, TOTAL-Q (recovery scale), and VAS (pain threshold), suggesting that HRW does not directly affect post-exercise recovery.

The authors conclude that 8 days of hydrogen-rich water consumption can increase muscular endurance in trained individuals. However, the effect on recovery from muscle soreness and fatigue is limited, and further studies with more rigorous designs are needed to better understand the long-term effects of H₂ as well as optimal administration for improving muscular function.

Can molecular hydrogen reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress in healthy adults?

Summary:
A meta-analysis study investigating whether molecular hydrogen (H₂) can function as a supplement to reduce oxidative stress caused by exercise in healthy adults.

The researchers review existing studies to assess how H₂ affects levels of oxidative stress and the body's antioxidant defence.
The analysis included a thorough review of publications from five databases using relevant keywords regarding hydrogen and oxidative stress. Based on the 6 studies with a total of 76 participants, the results showed that H₂ supplementation did not significantly reduce the levels of oxidative stress measured as reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs). Conversely, H₂ significantly improved the body's antioxidant capacity, measured by Biological Antioxidant Potential (BAP).

H₂ had a greater effect on antioxidant capacity during interval training than during continuous, prolonged exercise.

The researchers concluded that molecular hydrogen can increase antioxidant capacity in healthy adults, but that it does not appear to produce a direct reduction in oxidative stress after exercise. However, because research in this area is so new, it is believed that more studies are needed to also observe the long-term effects of H₂ as well as to determine the most effective methods for consuming hydrogen.

Molecular hydrogen benefits submaximal exercise parameters: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover pilot study

Summary:
The article investigates the effect of consuming hydrogen-rich water (HRW) in connection with exercise performance in healthy young adults.

The researchers aimed to assess how H₂ affects various physical parameters such as oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) during submaximal exercise.

In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 19 individuals participated (4 women and 15 men). The participants were randomised to consume either HRW or a placebo in 500 ml bottles, and the bottles were distributed one day before and one hour before a maximal exercise test on a treadmill.

Results: In the HRW group, a significant reduction in the average HR was observed during submaximal intensities (down to approximately 3–5 beats per minute compared to baseline and placebo), but there were no significant improvements in maximal sports performance. The effect on VO2 and RER was not significant, suggesting that H₂ only has a noticeable effect at lower intensities.

The consumption of hydrogen-rich water can provide benefits during submaximal exercise by lowering the heart rate, but it does not appear to affect maximal exercise performance in young, healthy adults. However, as with many other studies regarding Molecular Hydrogen, this is a new field where much more research is required.

Molecular hydrogen in sports medicine – novel therapeutic perspectives

European researcher Dr. Sergej M. Ostojic from the Center for Health Exercise and Sport Sciences Exercise Physiology in Belgrade. Ostojic is one of the leading researchers in the field of hydrogen therapy and sports physiology.

Summary:
Over the past two decades, molecular hydrogen has been recognized as a novel therapeutic agent with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects, which have been documented in many animal experiments and human studies. The beneficial effects of molecular hydrogen are particularly observed in diseases caused by oxidative stress, such as diabetes mellitus, cerebral infarction, rheumatoid arthritis, and neurodegenerative diseases. More recent studies have also reported that molecular hydrogen influences cellular signal transduction and functions as an alkalising agent, which may expand its application in clinical medicine.

The use of hydrogen in sports medicine is of particular interest due to its antioxidant properties. Intensive exercise leads to an overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can cause tissue damage. Utilising hydrogen as a potentially potent antioxidant can reduce oxidative stress and related conditions, such as fatigue and inflammation. Additionally, hydrogen-rich water may also exert a blood-alkalising effect that can counteract exercise-induced acidosis, a common metabolic disturbance among physically active individuals.

Molecular hydrogen has been used in experimental medicine for 40 years, with the first experiment conducted on mice with cancer. In the following decades, several applications of hydrogen were reported in clinical trials for both human and animal diseases. Many of these clinical studies have demonstrated positive effects of hydrogen on various biochemical indicators of oxidative stress and/or antioxidant capacity.

Although hydrogen-rich water has been considered the most popular means of delivering molecular hydrogen, research has also indicated that hydrogen has the potential to function as a signalling molecule in cells, which can regulate gene expression and phosphorylation of signalling proteins. However, there are still many unanswered questions regarding the clinical and physiological aspects of molecular hydrogen, including its precise mechanisms of action, the optimal dose, and any long-term effects.

Studies have also investigated the use of molecular hydrogen for the treatment of sports-related injuries, where hydrogen shows promise in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, as well as promoting faster recovery. It has likewise been discussed how different administration methods can affect efficacy, including the consumption of hydrogen-rich water, gas inhalation, or intravenous administration.

In conclusion, more studies are needed to confirm the clinical effects of molecular hydrogen, particularly in sports medicine, and to explore methods for optimising and standardising its use as a therapeutic tool. Its ability to function as an anti-inflammatory and recovery aid in sports could pave the way for more widespread recognition and application in clinical settings.

Is hydrogen water better than alkaline water?

When drinking alkaline hydrogen-rich water, what delivers the greatest effect? Is it because the water is alkaline or because it contains hydrogen?

Summary: It is definitively the fact that the water contains Molecular Hydrogen H₂ which is the primary responsibility for the many therapeutic effects.

Ionised water - or as it is referred to in research, ERW (Electrolyzed-Reduced Water), also known as alkaline ionised water - is produced through the electrolysis of water and is claimed to have numerous health benefits, which it indeed does. However, a review clearly demonstrates that the observed benefits can be attributed to molecular hydrogen (H₂), which is the sole active component causing the therapeutic effects.

Hypotheses regarding ERW have been systematically investigated and dismissed, leading to the conclusion that H₂ is responsible for the therapeutic effects achieved by drinking ionised water. It is not the other physical or chemical properties of ERW, such as pH or negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), that produce the therapeutic effects.

The research article, which was 10 years in the making and is thoroughly comprehensive, highlights the unique properties of H₂ such as its ability to penetrate cell membranes and exert antioxidant effects, making it effective against oxidative stress-related diseases such as metabolic syndrome and autoimmune diseases.
It is important that both researchers and consumers recognize the role of H₂ in ERW, as current misinformation can lead to misunderstandings regarding the actual health benefits.
Many previous hypotheses used to explain the effects of ERW have now been dismissed through scientific investigation, and therefore future research should focus on measured concentrations of H₂.

Molecular hydrogen is the primary component explaining the biological benefits of electrolyzed-reduced water, without the need to resort to alternative, often mythological explanations.

Longevity – how molecular hydrogen promotes healthful longevity through redox-based mechanisms

Age-related diseases pose a significant threat to public health, as aging is often associated with a degenerative and progressive process that leads to loss of function and increased mortality. Centred around increased oxidative stress and inflammatory states, these factors play a key role in the development of diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic disturbances.

In 2023, the article “Redox-Mechanisms of Molecular Hydrogen Promote Healthful Longevity” sheds light on the advanced redox-based mechanisms through which molecular hydrogen (H₂) can contribute to healthy aging. The research shows that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of H₂ can help delay disease development and improve overall health status by regulating the oxidation state of cells.

Aging is a degenerative process in which oxidative stress - driven by an excess of harmful free radicals - is a central factor. H₂ has been shown to protect cells by eliminating these free radicals and thereby reducing inflammation, which can greatly delay age-related degenerative disorders. Furthermore, H₂ promotes a healthy gut flora and influences the intestinal microbiome, which is crucial for immune function and general health.

Studies also indicate that mild dehydration can contribute to a range of age-related diseases, underscoring the importance of dietary approaches. H₂ can be administered safely through water, making it an economical and practical therapeutic method. It protects cells from damage, improves quality of life, and can contribute to mitigating cognitive decline.

All in all, there is growing evidence that the redox-activated mechanisms of H₂ make it a promising tool in the fight against age-related diseases. Research indicates that H₂-based therapies could potentially revolutionise both prevention and treatment, thereby improving quality of life and contributing to a longer, healthier lifespan.

Here you can get an overview of the latest research within the use of hydrogen regarding treatment, health, and performance.

[189
327

post-52925","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-videnskab","tag-forskning
["https://iwater.dk/wp-content/uploads/Hydrogen-Forskning-omkring-sundhed-scaled-1-1024x432.avif",1024,432,true
["GET
