6 typical symptoms of dehydration

Dehydration can be caused by many different things - everything from warm air temperatures, alcohol, and hard physical activity to illness with, for example, fever or diarrhoea. But one thing is certain: it is neither pleasant nor healthy to be dehydrated. Therefore, we will go through six typical symptoms of dehydration here and give you good advice on what you can do if you become dehydrated.

What is a lack of fluids?

A lack of fluids basically occurs because you have too little fluid in your body. Human body weight consists of around 65% water. So, the amount of water you have in your body depends on your weight. To maintain the amount of fluid, you must remember to get enough fluid. Without enough fluid in the body, our body and brain simply do not function properly. An optimal fluid balance plays a major role. Fluid balance is the ratio between how much sweat and urine we excrete and how much fluid we intake. So, if you have, for example, gone for a long run and sweated a lot, you need more fluid than if you had not run in order to maintain a good fluid balance.

Warm weather, alcohol, and illness with a fever or diarrhoea are also things that affect your fluid balance and can make you dehydrated.

How do you feel a lack of fluids?

Dehydration has consequences for the body. If you are dehydrated and lack fluids, you will therefore experience feeling unwell quite quickly. However, you can experience it in different ways, and we have therefore listed the six most common symptoms of dehydration below.

6 symptoms of dehydration

  • Fatigue and weakness in the body
  • Thirst
  • Headache
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Loose skin and dry mucous membranes - if the skin on the back of your hand remains raised after you have pinched it, it is a sign that you are dehydrated.
  • Dark urine - if your urine is very dark when you urinate, it is a clear sign of dehydration. However, it is normal to have darker urine than usual in the morning after sleeping.
