Hydrogen therapy and children
Can children tolerate hydrogen therapy?
Hydrogen is not a foreign substance, but the body's own protector, and therefore it is completely harmless and biocompatible, working by supporting the body's own ability to heal and regulate itself – also in children.
You can safely give your children hydrogen water and hydrogen inhalation
The body is already familiar with hydrogen. Our gut bacteria produce large amounts of molecular hydrogen daily as a byproduct of digestion – especially when we eat fibre. Hydrogen supplied through water or inhalation is the same as what the body produces itself.
Therefore, hydrogen is also safe for children
This is because hydrogen is a selective antioxidant that only neutralizes the most harmful free radicals (e.g., the hydroxyl radical •OH), while leaving the useful signalling molecules alone. This means that hydrogen does not interfere with the body's normal biochemistry – it simply supports it.
In contrast to many chemical substances and vitamins, hydrogen cannot be overdosed. The excess hydrogen naturally leaves the body through exhalation within a few minutes.
Clinical trials (on both children and adults) have shown that hydrogen does not negatively affect blood pressure, heart rate, liver, kidneys, or the endocrine system. In fact, hydrogen is used in Japan and China as a supplement in hospital treatments – even for infants with inflammation or oxygen deprivation.
Why hydrogen can be particularly beneficial for children
When the nervous system is on alert – and the body calls for calm
Children's bodies are developing and often produce more oxidative stress, especially during fevers, infections, or allergies, but also in children who train more than their bodies are designed for.
- Hydrogen can help protect cells and support recovery
- It can support energy and concentration because it strengthens the mitochondria – the cells' powerhouses
- It can relieve inflammation, which often plays a role in, for example, asthma, eczema, and digestive issues
- It contributes to calmness in the nervous system because it dampens stress and inflammation in the brain
How children can receive hydrogen
The most obvious way is to drink hydrogen-enriched water and by installing a tap in the home that can always deliver hydrogen-enriched water, such as a "Spring", which is super easy for children to handle. Alternatively, they can have their own water bottle with super water – a bottle ready for the bag called “Pocket”.
Hydrogen water is drunk like regular water, typically 1–2 glasses a day depending on age and size.
Hydrogen inhalation: Used under parental supervision – especially during fatigue, illness, or recovery.
